2020
2020 Season has been one to remember with the threat of the COVID-19 virus causing restrictions and a delay to our usual Season start.
President’s Message
2020 was a year that I’m sure we’ll all never forget; a year scarred by a global pandemic which touched every aspect of our lives. This of course included football.
Thankfully we live in Perth and had a football season up and running, unlike some other states. Our pre-season was interrupted, our season start delayed, and we ran a shorter season overall. This included forgoing a traditional finals format in favour of more regular season rounds, with just a Grand Final played between the top 2 teams in each Youth division.
Our committee recognised that many families were financially impacted by the pandemic. In light of that, we decided to run the club at a loss in 2020, targeting a loss of $7000 offset by the profit we made in 2019 of the same amount, This decision allowed us to greatly reduce our fees to help our football community out, and we additionally offered fee free registration for any families that needed it. A number of families opted to donate their partial fee refund back to the club, and we greatly appreciate their generosity- thank you so much.
Player numbers across many clubs were down notably from 2019, assumedly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our membership remained fairly steady. We had teams through all Auskick and Juniors age groups, Youth boys teams from Year 7 to Year 10 with a Rossmoyne JFC/Willetton JFC merged side in Year 11/12, and expanded our all-female program with a third girls team. Our girls now have Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11/12 options which reflects the growth of this competition.
We had amazing on field success again this year, with our Year 9 Boys finishing runners up, and our Year 9/10 Girls and Year 10 Boys bringing home the Premierships in their respective competitions. Our Year 9/10 Girls won their Grand Final match against a team that had gone undefeated all season, seeing many of these girls repeat their efforts of last season where they also won a flag against a team that went undefeated prior to the grand final. Our Year 10 boys were frontrunners all season, going one better than they did in 2019. Congratulations to all our teams.
2020 marks my fourth year as President and my fifth and final year on the committee. I truly appreciate the efforts of all of our volunteers each season; our coaches and managers, our first aid officers and runners, parents who help with set up, goal umpiring, pack up and everything else needed, and our committee. I would like to thank you all for everything you have done to continue to make our club the wonderful, strong and inclusive club we share today. I’s also like to thank our players for continuing to play the “Willo Way” each and every week.
Over my time as President, two people in particular have done so much to support me and our club, Nat Fay and Robyn Eade have held several roles on the committee each. They are two amazing women who just get in and get things done, and a large part of why our club is in such a strong position. Thank you both for everything you continue to do for our club and all you’ve done to counsel me and keep my head in the right place.
I’ve always been very proud to be associated with this great club, and even though I’m retiring at the end of the season, I’ll always be Navy Blue.
Dave Blechynden
